There are several reasons for making your own breadcrumbs. When I was a little girl, my mother told me that it was a sin to throw bread away since bread represented the Body and Word of Christ. So she never did and I never forgot that. All those ends of sliced bread and sometimes Italian bread that is more then a day old can be put in a dish in the oven (not on) and dried there. Then when you are ready just grate it and keep it in a air tight container in the refrigerator; it will keep almost forever. Italian bread especially makes the best crumbs. If you have hard to grate pieces throw them out for the birds and squirrels (God's creatures) to eat. |
