Food; Broccoli and cheddar Quiche

This originally started out as a Weight Watcher's recipe, but, not anymore.  There is nothing Weight Watcher about it and I hate to say it, but much more delicious.

Happenings; A sad occasion, the closing of the pool

Copyright by The Old School Housewife
Even though, technically, summer is not over, it feels over when we have to close the pool.  The water is too cold now because of the cool nights and with school starting, no one goes in it anymore.  Boy, did this summer go by fast!!!

I love these flowering plants, but I don't know the name of them, so if anyone does, would you please let me know?  All of the above plants are in different parts of my yard and they are so easy to grow.  They hardly need any attention and come up every year.  They turn pink close to the fall which is great.  I see them in almost everyone's yards so someone must know what they are called.  I couldn't even find it on line.  Thanks.

Food; "Waste not, want not" Frogia

"Waste not, want not" took on another whole meaning to my mother-in- law, Anna Alba.

Gardening; Red and Yellow tomatoes

Copyright by The Old School Housewife
We're nearing the end of our tomato crop, there are still a few plants left and now we're getting our yellow tomatoes.  I love the yellow ones not only for their color, but they are a little sweeter and the acidity level is less then the red ones.  The red ones are good not only for salads but for cooking with.  The yellows ones are mostly good for salads and in sandwiches.  I love them both.

Nature; I'm seeing red!

Copyright by The Old School Housewife
I'm starting to see little splashes of red here and there.  Although, I love the fall season, I will be very sad to see summer go.  Well, it's not gone yet.  The pool is still up.

Gardening; Vanilla Strawbery Hydrangea

This is my Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangea.  It's so pretty, it has creamy white, medium pink and dark pink blooms all at the same time.  They will last till there is frost and are good for picking and drying.  They last all winter as a dried flower.

Dessert; Blueberry muffins made healthier

Copyright by The Old School Housewife
This is a recipe that I have been using for over 30 years.  It is a really good recipe for blueberry muffins.  But, since my husband and I are trying to eat healthier I made some substitutions and they are still just as good, in fact my husband didn't even know the difference.  I will give you the original recipe and how I made it healthier.

Gardening; So sad!! Is summer over already? Also a simple recipe for the beans.

It seems like we just planted these vegetables and now I had to pull them out.  The cucumber plants are done so I pulled them and the green bean plants are done.  But to my surprise

Dessert; Mexican Chocolate Cake

Copyright by The Old School Housewife
This is the Mexican chocolate cake we had with our Mexican dinner.  The family liked it, except my husband-too sweet for him, but not for everyone else.  It has a caramel frosting on it and cinnamon in the cake.  The cake was easy, the frosting took a little longer, but it was worth it.  Recipe to follow.

Food; Mexican night at the Alba's

Picture taken by Marinda Seiwell
I decided to go Mexican tonight.  Every Saturday my we have a big family dinner and tonight it was taco salad, on the far left, chicken enchiladas in the middle and Chichi's corn bread on the right.  We had Mexican chocolate cake for dessert.  It was a big hit.

Nature; Video of a little bird taking a bath

You know by now that I love birds.
I caught this little bird taking a bath and couldn't resist getting it on video.  I only regret that I didn't start till he was almost done.  He was very thorough through out the whole process.

Nature; Beautiful clouds over my house this evening

Copyright by The Old School Housewife
This was what the clouds looked like over my house this evening.  I always wondered where the color comes from. Some day I'll have to look it up.  I just thought it was so pretty.

Nature; Hand of God?

My daughter, Shelly, took this picture from her front yard.  She thought, and I agree with her that it looked like the "hand of God".  She said it was more beautiful in person.

Home Life; Surprise flowers

Copyright by The Old School Housewife
I had no idea that this plant would make flowers.  Just yesterday I spotted these tiny little flowers on this huge plant.    There are some in the back of the plant too.  I think it might be in the begonia family, but I'm not sure.  It came in a 1 or 2" pot when I first bought it.  I loved the leaves and didn't know it would get this big.

Gardening; A tree growing flowers on the trunk??

Copyright by The Old School Housewife
Look what my husband did!  There was a huge hole where a branch used to be in this tree, so my husband took one of my hanging baskets and took the plant out of the pot and stuck it in the tree.  I thought it was pretty clever and it looks pretty.  I hope it continues to grow.  Maybe we'll buy one for that space next year.

Nature; Thank God for the rain

Copyright by The Old School Housewife
The ground is dry and thirsty.  The grass is brown and some plants and flowers were drooping as a result of lack of rain, even though we watered every day.  So, thank God for the rain we are getting, a nice steady rain that will soak in the ground.  The earth needed it.

Here is Olivia jumping in the pool.  I caught her in mid air.  In case you are wondering, her mother is in the pool too, I just didn't get her in the picture.  The water was cold, but it didn't stop her.

Dessert; Cherry chip cake with chocolate gnash

I made this for my family for tomorrow's dessert.  It's very simply a cherry chip cake with white fluffy frosting and chocolate gnash that was made by mixing chocolate chips with heavy whipping cream and melting it over the stove.
